Q&A: Heavy Duty Fence Repair Tool
What exactly is this fence repair tool designed to do?
This tool is specifically designed to tighten and repair loose or sagging wire fencing. It grips the wire securely and uses leverage to pull the slack out, restoring proper tension to barbed wire and other metal fencing types without requiring complete fence replacement.
Is this tool easy to use for beginners?
Yes! Based on our testing and customer feedback, even first-time users can quickly get the hang of it. One reviewer mentioned, “First time using one of these, but man did it make things a lot faster/easier for one person!” It does take a few attempts to perfect your technique, particularly with the wire wrapping, but most users master it quickly.
How durable is this fence repair tool?
We’ve found mixed results regarding durability. The tool is made of cast iron and weighs 5.5 pounds, which suggests sturdiness. However, some users have reported issues with the tool breaking at the hinge point where it pinches the wire. Quality control appears inconsistent, with some units lasting years while others failed during first use.
What types of fencing can this tool work with?
The tool works particularly well with barbed wire fencing but can also be used on other metal wire fencing types. We’ve tested it on both new and old fences, with one customer specifically noting, “This works great on old old fences.”
Does it really save time compared to other repair methods?
Absolutely! Multiple users highlight the time-saving aspect, especially for one-person operations. It eliminates the need for complete fence replacement and allows for spot repairs of loose sections. One customer mentioned saving “a ton of time, compared to using stretchers.”
Is this tool worth the investment for small property owners?
If you have even a moderate amount of wire fencing to maintain, we believe this tool offers good value. While primarily marketed toward farmers and ranchers with large properties, smaller landowners with wire fencing will also benefit from its ability to make quick repairs without specialized assistance.
Any tips for getting the best results with this tool?
Based on our testing and user feedback, we recommend:
- Practice the wire-wrapping technique a few times before tackling your actual fence
- Push the wire toward the back when pinching it for better results
- Tighten the bottom ring frequently during use to prevent it from coming apart
- Be patient with your first few attempts as there is a learning curve
how does it perform on older fencing?
We found it particularly effective on older fences that have naturally sagged over time. One reviewer specifically mentioned its effectiveness on “old old fences,” making it ideal for farm properties with aging infrastructure.
Step 1. Choose any convenient point along the slack fence line to make the repair. Spread the tool handles and place the slack wire in jaw slots.
Step 2. Bring the handles together to stretch the wire as tight as possible, forming a loop in the fence wire. Secure the tool in this position by attaching the chain to the notch in the right handle.

Step 3. Lay a short length of spare wire across face of tool, allowing 7' to 10' on either side.(Any kind of strong wire will work in making the repair.)
Step 4. Wrap spare wire around the stretched fence wire making sure to get a least 2 full wraps on each side.

Step 5. Inset fence pliers handle
(or any tool) into the loop. Wrap
the loop around the spare wire.
Step 6. Continue wrapping until loop is
completely closed around the spare wire.

Step 7. Loosen the chain and
remove tool from wire.
